Cascara sagrada grows up to 10–15 meters tall, with a slender trunk and smooth grayish bark. The leaves are oval, glossy green, and have prominent veins. It produces small greenish flowers that later develop into dark purple or black berries.
The most important part of the plant is its bark, which must be aged for at least a year (or heat-treated) before use. Fresh bark can be too harsh and may cause strong side effects. Traditionally, Indigenous peoples of North America used cascara bark for digestive issues.
